Artist statement
Two interwoven projects explore presence, impermanence, and connection to land. In Body in Landscape, movement becomes a dialogue with volcanic terrain. In Hedges, anthotype prints from hedge pigments fade with time. Both offer a meditation on ephemeral, embodied relation.
Extended Bio
Raúl Bartolomé is a photographer, director of photography, and filmmaker whose work spans across documentary filmmaking, fine art, and collaborations with artists in dance, architecture, and visual arts. With a background in cinematography, video, and photography, Raúl holds a Bachelor's Degree in Director of Photography from the Escuela de Cinematografía de la Comunidad de Madrid (ECAM) and furthered his studies with a Master's Degree in Photo Projects from Blackcamera Photo School in 2023.
Raúl’s professional journey as a freelancer began in 2004, where he quickly established himself as a versatile visual artist. His portfolio includes a variety of international collaborations, including photography and videography for artists like Pejac, Carlos Saura, and Carmen La Griega. His work in dance is equally notable, having collaborated with prominent butoh dancers and choreographers, creating photo books, videodance, and performance visuals. Raúl has also worked on large-scale social projects, bringing together photography and dance to explore and document social issues.
In the documentary field, Raúl’s work as a director of photography includes notable projects such as Suicidio: El Dolor Silencioso (2023), a series for RTVE, and Renzo Piano: Un Arquitecto para Santander (2018), directed by the renowned Carlos Saura. His documentaries have screened at festivals such as Documenta Madrid and DocLisboa, and his passion for telling intimate, often challenging stories continues to shape his artistic journey.
Raúl’s work in photography has taken him to various corners of the globe, from Greenland’s Arctic landscapes to art residencies in Taiwan and India. His personal and art-driven projects often explore themes of identity, landscape, and the human body.
