Artist statement
Octavia Madden blends observation with abstraction, translating her surroundings—guided by feeling and memory—into a visual language of marks, patterns, colour, and shape. Lichens, delicate yet resilient, are central to her work, serving as a lens through which she explores the environment.
Extended Bio
Madden’s creative practice begins with looking, searching, and discovering in the landscape around her. Walking through and being immersed in the environment reveals deeper layers of the land. Her initial observations en plein air are recorded in a sketchbook. Back in her studio, she works from these sketches as well as from memory of the sense of place to create detailed drawings. Drawing is her way to respond, process, and translate without words, capturing the enduring images that stay with her. These then transform again through the life of paint.
