Extended Bio

Please note that last entry time at the Valiant Soldier is 3pm to allow for 30 minutes of browsing before close at 3.30pm. If you would like to meet a specific artist please contact them to arrange a day and time as we are not all going to be at the venue at all times throughout Open Studios. Diane Halkes: Yonder Ceramics - Ceramic work and the occasional foray into printmaking, inspired by landscape and botanical forms. I am exploring, experimenting and refining my practice with handbuilt and thrown pieces. Kate Walters: I'm inspired to create scenes of local places that are beautiful and which I have a connection with. I am a painter and print maker but I like to explore other methods too. Fiona Campbell: I am a photographer with over 30 years of experience, most recently specialising in botanical imagery. Inspired by the herbarium tradition, my work focuses on capturing the extraordinary diversity of plants, flowers, and foliage, often combining the art of pressing with photography to highlight the unique characteristics of each specimen. Each image serves as both a record and an interpretation—capturing the individuality of each specimen while also reflecting the broader diversity of the natural world. Almut Woolard: After teaching sculpture and crafts for 20 years in a school, I am now working independently as artist and tutor. My art is inspired by the ever changing and evolving forms in nature and the seasons. Animals and the development of plant forms are a constant inspiration for me to create pure forms. Working wood with traditional hand tools and techniques is a very rewarding experience. Each piece of wood is differed and carving is an inspiring conversation with the unique piece of living material. Teaching is the joy of sharing experiences and learning from each other. I regularly give woodcarving courses in my Buckfastleigh studio. Contact me at [email protected]
