Marbled gifts & vouchers by Rachel O’Connell

Marbling is listed in the Red List of Endangered Heritage Crafts. I am one of less than 20 professional marbling artists in the UK. Marbling is an ancient surface pattern technique, created from flicking inks, or paints onto the surface of the water bath, with patterns made, using breath-work, simple tools, rakes, or combs, before being transferred to paper, or textiles.

Using traditional skills I create contemporary marbled homewares, including lampshades, cushions, tableware and vessels, as well as gift wrap, books and marbled leather goods and jewellery.  I use marbling bath paints to create abstract artwork.  I use several marbling techniques to create a diverse array of work, showing that marbling is not just for end papers found inside leather books anymore!

Using Suminagashi techniques, I ink marble onto silk to create lampshades and silk scarves and on paper to create Japanese stab-bound books, cards and gift wrap.  I use European combed heritage patterns to create marbled textiles for homewares, book covers, gift wrap, marbled leather carry goods and jewellery.

As a sustainable maker I work with organisations such as Blue Patch and MAKE Southwest Green Maker Initiative (GMI).  Blue Patch introduced me to The Royal Opera and Ballet, who kindly donate their theatrical textiles for me to repurpose, proceeds from the sales go to Trussell Trust food bank charity.  The GMI offer a chance for makers to pledge to work sustainably, using circular design, materials exchange and participate in R&D projects, or work with schools on sustainable materials projects and raise awareness to the wider community about the climate emergency and advocacy for educational out-reach.

I am a teacher, teaching at West Dean Art College, Oxford Summer School, the National Trust and in national museums, galleries, schools, as well as small focussed class sizes in my home studio.  I also teach 14-19 years with The Creative Dimension Trust and demonstrate at Craft Festival.

For my online shop, I make to order, with goods shipped 4 weeks from order.  My order book will close on 2 December for goods to be shipped within the UK in time for Christmas delivery.

From the end of November, I will have items available to buy in my Ready to Ship tab in my shop. These are shipped within 3 days.  These will include Christmas baubles, marbled paper chains and marbled paper tree decorations.

I also have E-Cards available which can be used for any item in my shop (made to order or ready to ship), kits or workshops. My kits are a great way to offer an at home marbling experience and the gift cards are a lovely way to purchase a studio workshop experience for a loved one who loved colour and pattern.

You can also purchase from The Craftmongers Ashburton, MAKE Southwest Bovey Tracey and London House Gallery Bideford

I will have work in the New Brewery Arts, Cirencester: JOY! Christmas exhibition 25th October 2025 – 3rd January 2026
