Sue Gay Bio

My work aims for a subtle vitality. I often begin a painting by transferring watercolour or acrylic from glass, which creates a fluidity that gives an intuitive, unforced character. Weaving with words embeds the threads of stories found and lost.
I first entered a life studio at 18, and still pay my artistic dues there regularly, but my evolution as a painter has been unconventional. I read natural sciences at Cambridge University, followed by a PhD in paleontology and comparative anatomy. Here I refined my craft through meticulous illustrations to support the study of skeletons and musculature.
After a time away from painting and exhibiting, I’m currently exploring a direction that is both new and old for me, with a series investigating Origins. An homage to medieval masters of religious iconography, the paintings are evolved from fluid paint applied via glass and overlaid with scientific writings from Darwin.
