Jeanette Appleton Bio

After an international career in the textile arts as an exhibitor and tutor Appleton
is now concentrating on the importance of nature through drawing on paper and fibre. Using scattered marks made with plants dipped in ink, sap & soil on paper. Or
embedded marks using seeds, soil and thread within felted fibre.

Presently engaged within a specific site by volunteering at Marwood Hill gardens in North Devon. This unique vantage point of being immersed within foliage reveal hidden surprises and details in the seasonal life of plants. Interpreting these layers of lines and shapes with a collage of plant marks and stains using fragile transparent papers or fibres.

Considering the delicate balance between control and chaos in gardens both wild and tamed. Ideas are developed and influenced by researching the colonial history and collections of plants. Exploring the hidden importance of mycelium and soil, emphasising the need to nurture nature as it holds the fundamental elements of life.

Participated in major projects with work shown in The Sainsbury Centre, Norwich and the Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto. An Arts Council funded solo show toured the UK in 2007-9. The pandemic changed Appleton’s global view to the local which is explored in her book‘Textile Creativity in Nature’ published by Batsford in 2023.
