Ray Balkwill Bio

Ray Balkwill lives and works close by the Exe Estuary and it's a place that he has a deep and personal connection with. For more than four decades the estuary has provided a visual stimulus for his art in a variety of media. From paintings produced en plein air in watercolour, pastels and oils, to studio paintings in acrylics, collage and mixed media. However, Ray is continually experimenting and seeking new ways of looking at a familiar subject. Perhaps none more so than with his recent assemblages where he produces artworks made from material found on the foreshore of the Exe.

Ray has held many successful solo exhibitions, as well as showing in group and open exhibitions including the R.I., R.W.A. and the South West Academy. In 2006 he was elected an Academician in the South West Academy and was a member of the St Ives Society of Artists for over twenty years. He is the author of seven books and has contributed to many others. He is a regular contributor to art magazines and has also made two art instruction films with APV Films. www.raybalkwill.co.uk
