Bickington, Newton Abbot painting Teignbridge

Michael McDonagh Wood Bio

I started painting in watercolours in the late 80s. Before that, I had been working in acrylic and also making etchings and screen prints. I was immediately entranced by the subtlety and fluidity of watercolour which enabled me to fully achieve my visual goals. I love painting water and architecture so Venice is always an inspiration. I favour the quiet backwaters away from the famous sites and tourist bustle. I also particularly like the vernacular architecture of the south west region of France where medieval villages nestle harmoniously into the limestone landscape.
I use a range of watercolour techniques to achieve the texture of the weathered buildings as well as the constantly changing reflections on the canals. I exhibit my work at Devon Open studios and Artizan gallery in Torquay.
