Louise Hutton is a contemporary artist based in North Devon, originally from Greater Manchester. After taking early retirement in 2024, she committed to developing her art practice full-time, bringing together painting, drawing, collage, writing and assemblage.
Louise’s intuitive, experimental practice explores the spaces between the inner and outer worlds: dreams and waking life, memory and place, nature and imagination. She has recorded her dreams for over a decade, drawing on their characters, symbols and strange logic alongside her experiences of the Devon and Cornwall landscape. The coast, ancient woodlands, rivers, caves, pathways and changing skies become catalysts for paintings that explore freedom, transformation, belonging and the possibility of finding a way through.
Working from her garden studio, Louise builds layered surfaces using acrylic, ink, oil pastel, charcoal and hand-painted papers. She works intuitively, adding, removing, scraping and collaging until unexpected forms and connections emerge. Colour, movement, texture and disruption are central to her process.
Her practice has been shaped by a varied career in education, policy, communications and creative consultancy, as well as a lifelong love of making, writing and observing the natural world.
In 2025 Louise received an Emerging Artist Bursary from Devon Artist Network and exhibited through Devon Open Studios, including at Thelma Hulbert Gallery and The Beehive in Honiton. Three of her paintings were also selected for an international exhibition connected to the International Association for the Study of Dreams.
At the heart of Louise’s practice is a simple pursuit: to follow curiosity towards the places where something unexpected might emerge — and to invite the viewer to find their own way through.
