John Rockey took up woodturning after early retirement ,and quickly fell for the variety found in the material: each piece tells something about the life of the tree. Working mainly with Devon-sourced material, the richly coloured or patterned timbers are left to speak for themselves, while some plainer woods lend themselves to more decorative techniques such as a potter might use with texture and colour. Although this approach somewhat divides the woodworking community, there's definitely a place for it, when done with sympathy and skill - and many people agree! John is a member of the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain, and of the Woodbury Woodturners club, and also demonstrates at other local clubs. Each year he exhibits in the Devon Open Studios with the Moorland Makers group.
