James Williams Sculpture Bio

I create abstract often biomorphic forms by carving stone and ceramics with traditional hand tools. Many of my pieces are sensuous where I have enhanced the qualities of the stone to interact with light and invite touch. I am currently experimenting with ceramic sculpture and developing my clay hand building and throwing skills.

My first stone carving experience was in March 2015 when I attended a weekend stone carving course ran by Maria Moorhouse of Sculptworks at her studio on the Dartington Estate. In the early days I experimented with different methods and types of stone whilst learning some valuable stone masonry skills. It was at this time that I discovered the excitement and joy of direct carving, whereby I let the form develop in the here and now relationship with the stone as I am carving.

Natural forms are my biggest influence the contours, forms and shapes found in nature have a deep often subconscious impact on my work. Each piece I work with is a unique interaction where form grows and develops often becoming biomorphic. I have particularly enjoyed the way alabaster can be finished with such strong sensuous qualities especially enhanced light and smoothness to touch.

Living in South Devon where the landscape is defined by tidal rivers, the sea, rolling hills and ancient woodland gives me plenty of opportunity to be immersed and inspired by the naturally made forms of the land carved out by river and sea.
