Geoff Sellick Bio

I have been a designer for more than 35 years working in architecture, interiors, and furniture design.
Having spent most of my life living between the moors and coast my paintings are inspired by the ever-changing light and colour of the surrounding Devon countryside. They are painted intuitively, empowering the viewer to interpret their own imagery and stories. Being a designer constrained by rigid lines and practicality the paintings are a way for me to break free from these restrictions.
Last year I opened a small ethical design gallery and store supporting local crafts, also selling a curated selection of products from around the world that use reclaimed or sustainable materials or techniques.

Applying layers of oil and a cold wax mix I gradually build up layers and textures using rollers, spatulas, and palette knives, then scrape away areas to reveal the colours below. I often like to emphasise and exaggerate colour to give a more uplifting image, sometimes starting with areas of gilding wax to give an additional depth, light and vibrancy.

The artworks often celebrate views on and from Dartmoor, the rivers and seascapes.
I am surrounded by water, and this is very prevalent in my work. My subconscious has built up images over my life leaving a visual encyclopaedia of atmosphere, colours and visual scenes of rolling fertile fields and baron craggy tors.
The peace and quiet of the moors, the tranquillity and ebb and flow of the sea water as it breaks on the beach, the movement of the ever-changing estuaries and quickly changing weather are all abstracted into an impressionistic style.
