Alex is an award-winning craftsman, tutor, and author specializing in traditional woodcraft and spoon carving. He is passionate about the wellbeing aspects of craft and making them accessible to a wide audience.
Based in South Devon, Alex sources locally grown wood from within a 20-mile radius of Ashburton. His work is entirely hand-carved using traditional tools—an axe and knife—honouring the simplicity and authenticity of green woodworking techniques. Each spoon reflects his deep respect for the material and the process, blending function with aesthetic beauty.
Alex runs regular workshops for both beginners and experienced carvers, offering immersive sessions for children, adults, and community groups at Lower Sharpham Farm.
Alex is the author of Spoon Carving: From Log to Spoon (Crowood Press, 2024), a comprehensive guide to the craft. The book distills years of experience into a step-by-step learning journey, offering readers insight into the art of spoon carving through clear instructions, expert techniques, and beautiful photography.
Alex is the founder of Woodcrafters, a social prescribing initiative using craft as a therapeutic tool, providing accessible woodcraft sessions for individuals with mental health challenges. Alex will be joining Maker's Barn for Devon Artists Network in 2025
