Expanded Skies Bio

Expanded Skies jewellery and precious objects are miniature, wearable sculptures that tell a story. They connect the wearer to their special places, skies, land, water, animals and plants, celebrating features of the Dartmoor landscape. Handcrafted by Emma Whittaker, in recycled precious metals and set with fully traceable ethical gemstones, using traditional methods, and engraved with her hand-drawn aesthetic.

She trained as an artist and was familiar with working with all kinds of materials, usually on a large scale, so to enter the miniature world of gems and precious metals, she undertook further training in fine jewellery. After setting up the Green Maker Initiative with MAKE Southwest, to help designer makers reduce their environmental impact, and two decades of teaching and academic research in art and design, she applied her knowledge of sustainability to create ethical, beautiful and empowering objects.

Emma welcomes bespoke commissions, particularly those that respond the wild places of Devon and the natural world.

Emma Whittaker is an Associate Member of MAKE Southwest and a member of the international organisation, Ethical Metalsmiths and she runs the Ashburton Jewellery School.
