Alison is a mother to three gorgeous children, wife to one lovely lovely man and dog mum to two naughty four-legged friends.
She lives in the beautiful village of Shaldon, from where she gets her inspiration.
Her love of hand-building porcelain ceramics came about 16 or so years ago. Porcelain really comes into its own when light is near, under or behind, hence she creates tea-light and table lamp houses with many features. Does she like building these houses? Err the answer would have to be NO! This is because they frequently go wrong, crack and warp in the kiln, she can also be a little clumsy and often breaks a seagull off a roof top whilst loading into the kiln for the first firing. Each house has four walls, two roof panels, chimney, door and a seagull (hopefully), also as many cut out windows and window frames that she can manage. It’s a lot to ask of the porcelain to still be vertical by the end of the firings. Too wet and it all collapses and two dry, the components won’t fuse.
She perseveres with the house creation, despite never having enough, as these are the very things that her customers love, cherish and collect! They stand well on a mantelpiece in front of a mirror or on a windowsill, book case or desk.
Alison is a big fan of colour and pattern, as well as the use of some gold or platinum lustre… most of her pieces contain all of the above.
Each piece is created, dried, bisque fired (this is when it becomes ceramic and more robust), hand glazed using brush-on glazes, fired to 1200 degrees, gold/platinum added and then fired for a third and final time at a much lower temperature.
She also creates hanging decorations, wall art, plant pots, candle vases, bowls and trays to name but a few!
You can get in touch directly with Alison or see some of her work locally at Shaldon Post Office, the Shaldon Coffee Co and Darts Farm. Further afield, she will have a Christmas chalet at the Bath Christmas Market in Abbeygate Street (2026)
