Conditions: The final piece or pieces will need to be delivered by Spring 2024

Fee: £2000

The artist will be contracted on a freelance basis and will be responsible for paying their own tax and national insurance. £1000 will be paid on selection.

The fee covers all associated costs

Aim

The Burton has developed a yearly commission to support and promote artists from across the South West region. We are passionate about supporting local talent and this commission provides artists with a paid project with the final work accessioned into our renowned permanent collection.

We are seeking to commission a local South West artist, or collective, to develop a piece of work in response to climate change and environmental change, all media considered. We would like the successful applicant to reflect on the ideas of the changing face of our environment either through natural or man-made changes in our environment.

This creative exploration will result in work/s that will displayed in the Burton for 6 months before joining the Burtons Permanent Collection to be toured or loaned out.

Activity

Develop a project responding to the theme, all media considered.

Developing Own Work

There will be opportunities to research, develop and present work & well as the piece being part of the collection.

In addition, the Artist commissioned may be expected to

• Give a talk about their work
• Participate in the evaluation process of the commission
• Provide documentation on the commission for use in reports, presentations and social media • Positively represent Burton at Bideford
Experience
• Artists must be based in the South West Region

The copyright and all intellectual property rights in the created works and/or documents will remain vested in the artist or the person responsible for their production. The Burton will hold for the lifetime of the image & add to their collection.

About the Burton at Bideford

The Burton Art Gallery and Museum is over 70 years old. With its dedicated team of staff and volunteers, it has been celebrating, exhibiting and nurturing artists since being established on 31 October 1951 by local businessmen Thomas Burton, and Hubert Coop. We have Arts Council England funding for the Visual Arts as a National Portfolio Organisation 2018-2026 and are supported by Torridge District Council.

The Burton is a gallery showcasing local, national and international artist’s works and host to over 200,000 visitors each year. It has significant collections of paintings and ceramics and a houses a small museum celebrating local stories and traditions.

In 1994 the gallery was extended and refurbished, increasing its capacity to four times its original size. It now has three exhibition spaces, a museum, a craft gallery, a shop, an education space and a café.

Burton at Bideford’s Key Activities:

1. The Burton at Bideford showcases and develops and nurtures, supports and encourages artistic excellence by offering a range of opportunities to national as well as Devon-based artists and producers.

2. The Burton at Bideford’s Creative Learning Programme works in partnership with schools, local authorities and other creative centres to support pupils, teachers and other educators’ creative development.
