Owen Williams – Landscape Artist

Owen Williams is a Devon-based painter and illustrator. He works predominantly in oils, portraying the beautiful landscapes of Devon and Cornwall developed from sketches created whilst walking along the lanes and coastal paths.

Owen is largely self-taught as a painter but trained as a Graphic Designer at The Polytechnic, Wolverhampton. Inspiration struck whilst working at The National Gallry, London and he began painting figurative pieces based on Celtic myths and the poetry of W.B. Yeats. His career then took a tangential turn into commercial illustration working for advertising agencies in London and the South West. He continues to illustrate but balances his time between that and painting. Originally from the North East, Owen feels completely at home in the countryside but is drawn to the juxtaposition of industrial buildings and machinery with hedgerows, lanes and rich red earth.

Owen’s focus is in shaping forms by painting the negative space around them while playing with limited colour palettes. Inspiration comes from Fauvism and Expressionism with artists such as Andre Derain, Kandinsky and Chagall as well as artists such as Egon Scheile, Klimt, Munch and little-known Finnish artist Akseli Gallen Kallela.

Owen runs creative workshops for children and adults online or at his studio at the Antiques Village, Hele.
