Artist statement

My work is about celebrating the form and structure of botanical images. I work on a large scale to increase the abstract and sculptural qualities of the plants and to create the drama, that makes it possible for these fragile plants to become bold and statuesque images.

Extended Bio

During the last decade I have worked primarily with drawing materials on watercolour paper and canvas. I am now trying to find ways to use paint without losing the linear and tonal vocabulary of charcoal. By using hand painted collage, I am able to introduce colour without disturbing the fragile quality of the charcoal. The collage pieces are painted very vigorously so that the brush marks are evident and parallel the spontaneous way in which I use charcoal. These new experiments explore the possibilities of using colour fields to engage with the drawn image.
