Topsham mixed media, painting, printmaking East DevonSteph Weaver has lived in Devon near the river Exe for almost 7 years, starting printmaking in 2013 at Penzance School of Art then, painting evening classes whilst working full time as a health professional. In 2021 after leaving a career in nursing, she embarked on and completed, a whirlwind few years of learning and art practice. This included an HE Diploma Art and Design, Fine Art Degree studies at Exeter College/Art School and University of Plymouth then the Year Long Studio Practice course at Newlyn School of Art).
Inspiration arises from being out in the landscape (mostly theSouthwest), walking, sketching, photographing and gathering found objects then, back to the home studio for painting, collage and print making working with raw pigment, collected earth pigment, homemade egg tempera, homemade gesso, oils and ink. Excited by shapes and mark making, work may include multiple perspectives, sometimes without horizons; the focus being on a sense of place rather than on realism.
Steph is excited about the contribution of art to our state of well being, having experienced this on a personal level and, from observing its positive benefits on groups in the community in her previous health role. Working from home in her garden studio, Steph juggles her practice with caring for close family members who have health needs. She is a friend’s member of Double Elephant Printmaking Studio where she has recently been expanding her practice using painterly woodcut techniques. She is a member of the Topsham Art group and Crows Women’s Artist group.
