CONTEMPORARY BRITISH LANDSCAPE ARTIST
Rebecca Magner is a contemporary British landscape artist. She lives on a smallholding in the beautiful Tamar Valley, Devon, with her husband and two children and works from her home studio. She loves to walk in, sketch and photograph her local area, drawing inspiration from the varied landscapes: rural, estuarine, coastal, agricultural.
Using references from photographs, sketches and memories from her walks, Rebecca’s paintings evolve through a messy, exploratory process of building up layers, scraping back, reworking and drawing into. The initial layers are energetic and imperfect. The painting gradually evolves through quieter observation and a deeper understanding of her subject matter. The finished painting is achieved when the alchemy between the subject, materials and process have found that magical balance; resolved yet alive; complete yet an open invitation; beautiful yet honest and authentic.
Prior to moving to Devon, Rebecca painted from her studio at her Sussex home, nestled in ancient woodland. Her deep connection to the rhythms and cycles of nature are reflected in her work. She loves all the seasons, soft, pretty skies, low suns, long shadows, sunlight catching seed-heads and long grasses, beaches, rivers, estuaries, agricultural buildings and corrugated iron.
