I work mainly in stoneware occasionally adding other materials like sand or wild clay found locally. I may use the wheel or hand build. I’m interested mostly in form and texture, and particularly the combination of materials. I like to experiment, layer, see what happens. Sometimes where nothing was intended a scene may appear.
When I do make glazes I use wood ash as much as possible as it is readily available and sustainable. More recently I’m turning to less use of glazes, preferring the textures of the clay to be more visible and allowing more focus on the form.
I am increasingly more interested in wood firing and learning about this whenever I can.
My training and experience as an Art Psychotherapist has always lead to a focus on process rather than product.
My starting point always feels like the material, not making for purpose or function and I am increasingly more interested in more sculptural shapes, being led by the clay itself, letting new narratives be created.
