Ashburton ceramics South HamsAfter a career in medicine, I discovered pottery in retirement as a way to explore creativity and reconnect with the natural world. I value the concentration and quiet that come from working with clay.
My work is strongly influenced by the landscape around my Dartmoor home — its moorland, granite, wild flowers, rivers and changing light — as well as by the sea.
Each piece is individually made by hand in stoneware or raku clay. I enjoy allowing the firing process, particularly raku and wood firing, to introduce an element of unpredictability, so no two pieces are quite the same.
I make individual pots by hand in Devon, with a particular interest in raku and other firing methods that create unpredictable surfaces, colours and textures.
I came to pottery later in life and quickly became absorbed by the combination of form, fire and chance. Much of my work is thrown on the wheel, then altered, glazed or decorated to produce pieces that are deliberately individual rather than uniform.
I make functional and decorative ceramics in small numbers, with each piece shaped and finished by hand.
