Landscape and Seascape paintings
My paintings are unpopulated, atmospheric works inspired by wide-open spaces. I love the changes that take place in both land and sea with the seasons. I am particularly fascinated by the sky and would happily spend hours watching clouds slowly drifting or building into dense dark masses, fluctuating constantly, changing the colour and mood of the landscape from one moment to the next.
Remembering how it feels to be in the landscape is essential to the development of each painting as I try to capture the spirit of the place. In my studio I use the notes in my sketch books as a starting point for the colour and mood of each painting, concentrating on one painting at a time, using oil paint wet-in-wet on smoothly primed canvas.
Abstract paintings
My abstract paintings are inspired by the many natural objects, for example stones, twigs and seed heads which I find in my garden, or whilst exploring countryside and seashore. I have always been fascinated by repetitive ‘patterns’ within their structure and colour.
