Jan O'Highway Bio

In a long working life I’ve been fortunate to receive many commissions for both public and private spaces, and to develop community and education projects with people of all ages and situations; from Dr Barnados to a prison for immigrants, visually impaired groups and holiday play schemes.

A rigorous training in figurative drawing and painting at Guildford and Brighton Colleges of Art in the late 1950s has enabled my public art works, such as signage and seating, to be enjoyed and easily understood: practical and durable, they often combine colourful ceramic with steel.

While personal, exploratory work is wide-ranging in both themes and media, having started as a painter colour has always been and continues to be a major driver.
I frequently introduce reclaimed and found objects along with fused glass and ceramic – addressing questions of our planetary "footprint" by rendering toxic materials inert and keeping a miniscule amount of plastic waste out of the landfill and rivers!
