Clarissa Galliano Bio

The last five years, I have worked almost exclusively with charcoal on a large scale, using plants and flowers as my resource material.
My interest in the structure of plants happened quite accidentally.

I had been looking at wildflowers and was surprised by the incredible structure of a wild carrot globe.
I started a series of drawings, but it wasn’t until I increased the scale of the drawings that my interest became really focused.

As the scale of the drawings increased the presence of the plants took on a bold and Statuesque existence.
By exploring the architecture of plants and flowers, I have recognised an unbelievable well of subject matter an incredible world of strength and beauty… All from such humble beings. It is this dichotomy, which holds my attention.

Charcoal has long been my favourite medium, its capacity for modelling tone, diversity of markmaking, pace at which one can proceed, speed at which it can be brushed off and leave a beautiful ghosts of a journey, its ability to create dark, velvety, passages, raw, brutal edges, gentle hushed tones… A true partner to express my intentions.
